Primary Election Facts

Election Date: Tuesday, June 2, 2020

Poll Hours:     7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Voter Eligibility Requirements:   To vote in a partisan primary you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age, and a registered member of the Republican or Democratic Party of Louisa County.  Party affiliation may be declared at the polling place on Election Day. During 2020, voters will be asked to show their ID before voting at the polls.  Valid forms of ID include Iowa Driver’s License, Iowa Non-Operator’s ID, Student ID, Employer Issued ID Card, U.S. Passport, Out of State Driver’s License, Out of State Non-Operator ID, Military ID, Veteran’s ID, Voter ID Card, and Tribal ID card.

 

Voter Registration:  The deadline to register to vote is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22nd.                                  The Auditor’s Office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. New voters, also, can register on Election Day at the polling place for the precinct in which they currently reside. Louisa County has combined precincts with this election.  Grandview Port Louisa Precinct will vote at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello. West Louisa precinct will vote at the American Legion in Columbus Junction.  See below for more information. The voter will be required to show proof of residence and identity.  The best form of ID is a valid Iowa driver’s license with current address.

Where to Register: The Louisa County Auditor’s Office, 1st floor of the Courthouse, 117 S. Main St. Wapello, IA  52653 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m... Please call ahead to make an appointment. Online registration is also available at www.sos.iowa.gov.

 

Registration Changes: Name, party, and address changes within Louisa County may be

made any time up to and including Election Day.  Prior to Election Day, changes are made by the same means as voter registration.  On Election Day address changes may be made at the voters’ new polling site.

 

Absentee Voting: Absentee votes may be cast at the Auditor’s Office between May 4th and June 1st.  Request forms for absentee ballots may be obtained at the Louisa County Auditor’s Office or on the county website at https://elections.louisacountyia.gov/.  For the Primary Election, the voter also needs to specify the party (Republican or Democratic) for which they are requesting a ballot.  Voters requesting absentee ballots will be required to include their driver’s license/non-driver’s ID numbers on their request form. Voters receiving the Voter ID Card will be required to include their card’s four-digit PIN number on the absentee ballot request form.  Completed absentee ballots must be postmarked by midnight on June 1st. They can also be brought to the Auditor’s Office before the polls close at 9:00 p.m. on Election Day.

 

Explanation of the Partisan Primary:         Each party’s November General Election slate of candidates is, for the most part, nominated in the Primary Election.  To claim a nomination a candidate must receive a minimum of 35% of the votes cast in that race.  If in a multi-candidate election, no candidate is able to capture 35%, the nominee is selected by a party convention.
