Primary Election
The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.

Archived Election Details

Notice: Only three precincts will be open for the Primary Election. Columbus Junction, Southeast Louisa, and Morning Sun Marshall will remain open. All voters who voted at the Masonic Lodge in Columbus City will not vote at the Columbus Junction precinct which will be held in the American Legion building in Columbus Junction. Likewise, voters who voted at the Louisa County Complex will now vote at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello.

  • February 3 - First day to submit an Absentee Ballot Request; Caucus Day
  • March 2 - March 25 - County Candidate Filing Begins
  • March 20 -  County candidate filing deadline for NPPO candidates, candidates nominated by petition, and township offices (open until 5pm)
  • March 25 - County candidate filing deadline for republican and democrat candidates (open until 5pm)
  • April 23 - Absentee Ballots will start being mailed out
  • May 4 - First day to vote in-person absentee
  • May 22 - Voter pre-registration deadline; Deadline to request an absentee ballot be mailed (open until 5pm)
  • May 25 - Memorial Day; Auditor's office closed
  • May 29 - Auditor's office open until 5pm
  • May 30 - Saturday; Auditor's office open 9am-5pm
  • June 1 - Absentee ballot in-person deadline (open until 5pm)
  • June 2 - Primary Election Day
